Alan Livingstone M.D.
Board of GovernorsAlan S. Livingstone, M.D., is chief of surgical oncology at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, chairman of the Daughtry Family Department of Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital, and medical director of the University of Miami Medical Group.
Livingstone has dedicated his career to advancing the knowledge of cancer. As a surgeon, researcher, and teacher, Livingstone’s extraordinary vision and remarkable leadership have resulted in major medical contributions to Sylvester and the Miller School of Medicine. Under Livingstone’s leadership, Sylvester’s surgical oncology team created a pathway of treatment for esophageal and gastric cancer that is being adopted by surgical oncologists across the country. The team is at the forefront of breast-conserving surgery, including championing sentinel node biopsy, helping to ease the physical and emotional impact of breast cancer. An aggressive approach to primary and secondary liver tumors has been adopted combining chemotherapy, radical surgery, and various ablative techniques, and this has resulted in significantly improved outcomes in these complex patients.
Livingstone is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. He holds membership in some 30 professional organizations in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America. A native Canadian, Livingstone trained at McGill University in Montreal, earning his undergraduate degree, medical degree, and an additional specialty surgical degree. Internship and residency training were completed at Montreal General Hospital. Livingstone says, “In the quarter of a century I have been in Miami I have been able to participate in Sylvester’s tremendous growth and capacity to help ease the burden of cancer in the community. I believe it has enormous potential to be one of the best and most respected institutions in the country.”
