Chief Operating Officer/Chief Nursing OfficerLazara Barreras Pagan is the Chief Operating Officer/Chief Nursing Officer for Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and UMHC--University of Miami Hospital & Clinics where she is responsible for all clinical operations, including inpatient, outpatient, and satellite facilities, as well as education and training. She also oversees ancillary and support services.
Pagan started her career as an operating room nurse at Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital, and eventually became a nurse case manager specializing in catastrophic cases. She then worked in various clinical positions developing and managing a wide variety of programs and services, including serving as Director of Quality for a rehabilitation hospital, and overseeing United Parcel Services’ occupational health and safety in the South Florida district. Pagan re-joined the University of Miami in 2001 as Assistant Chair in the Department of Neurological Surgery. In 2004, she moved to the University of Miami Medical Group (UMMG) as Executive Director of Business Development and ultimately managed operations for the entire UMMG Faculty Practice Plan. Pagan came to Sylvester/UMHC as Associate Administrator/COO in 2007. In November 2009, she was promoted to Chief Operating Officer/Chief Nursing Officer where she continues to accomplish her “favorite things” – empowering staff, developing a culture of teamwork and accountability, and creating a great work environment for employees and physicians to provide excellent care for Sylvester/UMHC patients.
Pagan has a Bachelor in Health Services Administration from Florida International University and an Associate in Science Degree in Nursing from Miami Dade College. She is a licensed registered nurse and a licensed rehabilitation service provider in the State of Florida. Pagan is also certified as a disability management specialist and a case manager.
