Chief Nursing OfficerElizabeth L. Smith is the Chief Nursing Officer for Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and UMHC--University of Miami Hospital & Clinics where she is responsible for all clinical operations, and nursing operations for Inpatient Services, GI Services, Surgical Services and Pain. In addition, she is responsible for nursing operations for Outpatient and Satellite Facilities. She also is responsible for the operations of Hospital/Patient/Community Education, Respiratory and Infection Control/Employee Health.
Elizabeth started her career as a Trauma Registered Nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital and eventually became a Trauma Nurse Coordinator. In 1983, she came onboard to the University of Miami working for the Department of Cardiology as a Research Nurse. She began as Nursing Supervisor in 1988 at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center / UMHC and transitioned over to Assistant Director of Nursing and Education. Following that role, Elizabeth became the Director of Nursing Services overseeing Nursing Education, Nursing Compliance and Infection Control Employee Health. In 1995, she pursued a Director of Education role and eventually assumed the role of Education Manager for Tenet Health System Florida Region. In 2009 she was recruited as the Chief Nursing Officer for HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Miami for four years working in an inpatient acute rehabilitation setting. Her educational background includes a diploma in nursing from Jackson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Miami. She continued by getting her Bachelor’s Degree (concentration in business) from Barry University. In 2009 she received her Masters of Nursing from the University of Miami and in 2012 she graduated with a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of Miami.
