Bone & Soft Tissue Sarcomas
Sarcomas, or cancers of the bones and soft tissues, are extremely rare, making up only 1% of all adult cancers. Sarcomas develop from cells that maintain structure or cushion other organs in our bodies, including bone, cartilage, muscle, fat, and tendon (fibroblasts). They can develop anywhere in the body, including the extremities, head and neck, or inside the chest and abdominal cavities. With over 50 different types of sarcoma, it is extremely important to seek out doctors and surgeons who are used to treating these rare and complicated cases. While some sarcomas can be easily cured with surgery, others are very aggressive and can spread to distant organs. The number of sarcoma patients seen at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is rapidly increasing, with over 250 new patients seen last year.
At Sylvester, we use a multidisciplinary, site-based, and personalized approach for treating cancer. This means that multidisciplinary teams of dedicated, board-certified doctors with expertise studying and treating specific types of cancer oversee care. This approach provides each individual patient with advanced, state-of-the-art treatment protocols from physicians who are not just cancer specialists, but sub-specialists in the particular type of cancer. Sylvester’s sarcoma specialists have expertise in standard and experimental therapies for all bone and soft tissue tumors, including gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) as well as “benign” tumors such as desmoid fibromatosis, chordoma, giant cell tumors of bone, or pigmented villonodular sclerosis (PVNS). Our multidisciplinary team includes medical oncologists, pediatric oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, musculoskeletal radiologists, and pathologists who work together to diagnose and treat even the most complex and challenging cases of these rare cancers. In addition to standard therapy, we also offer clinical trials for newly diagnosed as well as metastatic or recurrent sarcomas. Additionally, we are rapidly building our sarcoma laboratory and clinical research program, including a comprehensive sarcoma patient registry and sarcoma tissue banking, with the ultimate goal of analyzing the science of sarcoma cancer cells and using that knowledge to design new treatments.
