Our youngest patients receive outpatient care in a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility, alex’s place at Sylvester. The 3,200-square-foot pediatric hematology-oncology clinic was made possible thanks to a generous donation by businessman and philanthropist Alexander Daly. More than simply a treatment site for children with cancer and blood diseases, alex’s place is a space designed to empower our young patients and support their families. Each chemotherapy bay will be equipped with its own flat screen monitor to watch videos or to use as a computer. The ceilings in each exam room include soothing images and kid-friendly colors and themes. The common areas of alex’s place are designed to be interactive with fun games and activities for children and their families. Other highlights include an onsite classroom where patients can keep up with their schoolwork and a tranquility garden for peaceful reflection and enjoyment outdoors.

Treatment & Diagnosis
The division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is the only university-based program of its kind in South Florida. Young cancer patients are treated by Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center specialists who are among the country’s finest pediatric hematologists-oncologists. All faculty members in the division were ranked as Best Doctors in 2009-2010.

Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma Program
The Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma Program provides comprehensive medical and surgical care for children and adolescents with benign or malignant bone and soft tissue tumors.
Our program is affiliated with the Miami Sarcoma Group, and we are committed to the comprehensive care of pediatric and adolescent patients through a multidisciplinary treatment approach, which includes a team of pediatric oncologists, orthopedic surgeons, pathologists, radiation oncologists, psychosocial workers, and physical therapists.
Bone Marrow Transplant Program
Bone marrow and stem cell transplantation is a highly-specialized treatment option that requires the best care. Sylvester, in partnership with the Holtz Children’s Hospital, offers the most advanced care before, during, and after treatment. The state-of-the-art, seven-bed unit at Holtz is designed for optimum family-centered care and offers transplants for infants, children, and adolescents with cancer, bone marrow failure, blood diseases, and congenital immune deficiencies.
alex’s place at Sylvester, the brand new pediatric hematology-oncology clinic, will be the site for pre- and post-transplant outpatient care.
The Miller School of Medicine’s pediatric Bone Marrow/Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Program is accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation for Cellular Therapy (FACT) and is the only university-based program of its kind in South Florida. Pediatric transplant patients have access to clinical trials through the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network and the Children’s Oncology Group.
Hematological Malignancies Program
Our Pediatric Hematological Malignancies Program is among the best in the country. The program is led by Julio Barredo, M.D., a leader in pediatric leukemia research. Through our membership in the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), our designation as a Foundation for the Accreditation for Cellular Therapy (FACT) accredited transplant center and our membership in Therapeutic Advances in Childhood Leukemia & Lymphoma (TACL), we are in a unique position in South Florida to offer standard treatment for these diseases and experimental, advanced treatment for relapsed or difficult to treat leukemia and lymphoma that is not otherwise available in our area.
Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program
UHealth’s Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program is led by the only pediatric oncologist certified in neuro-oncology in the state of Florida, Antonello Podda, M.D., and is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of professionals who deliver the necessary, comprehensive care to children affected by brain and spinal cord tumors. Using the most sophisticated of imaging techniques including MR spectroscopy and PET-CT as well as the most advanced radiation therapy methodologies like IMRT and gamma knife, the multi-specialty team delivers complex care covering all aspects from diagnosis and multimodal therapy to physical and neuro-cognitive rehabilitation.
Care for children with brain and spinal cord tumors is further enhanced by pediatric rehabilitation medicine with inpatient and outpatient facilities, audiologists and speech therapists, child neuro-psychologists, social workers, teachers and child life specialists. The children are followed from the day of diagnosis and therapy through the time of reentry to school and society, to early adulthood for long-term surveillance.
The Retinoblastoma Program at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is affiliated with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (the leading eye hospital in the nation) and is one of only three around the country capable of treating relapsed patients with intra-arterial chemotherapy.
With earlier detection and improved treatments, the prognosis for vision and life for retinoblastoma patients has improved significantly in the past twenty years. However, because the disease is so rare, it is essential for patients to be treated at an institution that specializes in the treatment of visually impairing diseases.
Cutting-edge treatment options within the Retinoblastoma program at Sylvester include: periocular chemotherapy, intravitreal chemotherapy, radiation therapy, laser therapy, and enucleation.
