The Pap Corps: Champions for Cancer Research

Pap Corps Funds Sylvester’s Search for a Cancer Cure

Presented at The Pap Corps President’s Meeting at the Boca West Country Club in Boca Raton on Thursday, May 15, 2014 The Pap Corps, Champions for Cancer Research has presented its largest annual gift ever, a check for $4.5 million, to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The check is part of the group’s $25 million commitment to Momentum2: The Breakthrough Campaign for the University of Miami.

Since it began under the leadership of five women, the organization has donated more than $50 million to cancer research at Sylvester. This year’s gift will provide critical seed money that scientists and researchers need to apply for grants from the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and other funding organizations.

W. Jarrard Goodwin, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., Director of Sylvester, thanked volunteers for their spectacular efforts.

About The Pap Corps

Since its inception, The Pap Corps (formerly known as the Papanicolaou Corps for Cancer Research) has donated more than $50 million to Sylvester.

Named in honor of cancer research pioneer, Dr. George N. Papanicolaou (developer/founder of the Pap Smear for cervical cancer), The Pap Corps is an all-volunteer group with more than 21,000 members across South Florida’s tri-county area that has supported cancer research at the University of Miami for 60 years.

The ongoing commitment of The Pap Corps funds the cancer center’s multidisciplinary research programs and investigations of prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers, as well as new diagnostic tools for a variety of cancers at South Florida’s only university-based cancer center.
