Carlos E Alfonso, MD, is a board certified interventional cardiologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is a Miami native of Cuban-American descent who graduated from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 2002, and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. He subsequently completed internal medicine and cardiovascular training at the University of Miami / Jackson Memorial Hospital training program. After completing further training in interventional cardiology in 2008-2009 he stayed on faculty with the University of Miami, working at the University of Miami Hospital as well as Jackson Memorial Hospital. He also has a part-time appointment to the Miami Veterans Administration Hospital where he spends part of his time doing interventional procedures. Clinically he is fully trained in interventional cardiology procedures including percutaneous coronary interventions including complex coronary disease, structural heart disease and transcatheter valve therapies, and peripheral vascular endovascular interventions.
As a junior faculty member he was awarded the outstanding faculty teaching award in 2010-2011. He served as associate program director before being named the Cardiology fellowship program director in 2013. He oversees the education and training for all the adult cardiovascular fellows across the medical campus and three hospitals and teaching institutions.
His research interests revolve around the treatment of coronary atherosclerosis including interventional procedures for complex, chronic CAD and the treatment of acute coronary syndromes including the identification and treatment of vulnerable plaque. He was the principal investigator for a safety and efficacy trial of a novel thermography catheter. He is also interested and involved in ongoing research with transcatheter valve therapies and TAVR since being involved as a co-investigator in the initial landmark US trials of TAVR including the PARTNER I, PARTNER II, and CoreValve trials. He continues to be actively involved clinically and his major clinical interests include complex coronary interventions including Chronic total occlusions (CTO), transradial cardiac catheterization and intervention, transcatheter valve therapies including TAVR, and peripheral vascular interventions and endovascular revascularization for peripheral vascular disease.
