Cervical cancer screening is the key to early detection. Know your risk

Cervical Cancer usually begins when abnormal cells grow in the cervix, which is located at the bottom of the uterus and above the vagina. Today, the human papillomavirus (HPV) accounts for more than 90% of cervical cancers and approximately 13,960 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer annually. Screening begins at 21 and continues until 65 years old. When screenings are performed regularly and cervical cancer is found early, the chance of survival significantly increases.

In 2021, the WHO announced that Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is the first-of-its-kind collaborating centre for cervical cancer elimination. Learn more.

What are the symptoms of cervical cancer?

People usually do not have symptoms with early stages of cervical cancer but screening may detect irregular cells that could be cancerous during routine screening and before symptoms appear.

Symptoms include:

Early-stage Symptoms

  • Vaginal bleeding after sex
  • Vaginal bleeding after menopause
  • Vaginal bleeding between periods or periods that are heavier or longer than normal
  • Vaginal discharge that is watery and has a strong odor or that contains blood
  • Pelvic pain or pain during sex

Advanced Symptoms

  • Difficult or painful bowel movements or bleeding from when having a bowel movement
  • Difficult or painful urination or blood in the urine
  • Swelling of the legs
  • Unusual pain in the abdomen
  • Constantly feeling tired
