The In The Garden Gala is one of the most prestigious black-tie fundraising galas in Miami, Florida. Bringing together nearly 1,000 medical, businesses and community leaders, the event helps sustain important programs at UM/Sylvester. The 8th bi-annual In The Garden Gala will benefit patient care, research and education at South Florida’s only university-based cancer center.
A highlight of the bi-annual gala is the presentation of the prestigious Caroline W. Halpern Award.
Recognizing an individual or family for exceptional generosity through volunteerism in support of Sylvester, Caroline Halpern Award recipients personify philanthropic leadership. It is no surprise that the 2008 Caroline W. Halpern Award recipients are Joan and S. David Scheiner.
Patients are the pulse of UM/Sylvester. Since the first patient admission in 1992, UM/Sylvester physicians, scientists and staff members have worked together to establish a tradition of excellence offered in an atmosphere characterized by kindness, caring and hope. Sylvester team members deliver compassionate care using an interdisciplinary approach to treatment, ensuring that all patients receive care from specialists who have expertise in specific areas of cancer. Funds raised at the In The Garden Gala will help enhance these services so that we can continue to give our patients personalized attention on a level that only a Comprehensive Cancer Center can offer.
Research at Sylvester goes beyond laboratories and new drug therapies. Basic scientists at our cancer center explore the progression of healthy cells that change to cancer, while physician-scientists bring those discoveries to the patient by offering the latest investigational treatments. We rely on the philanthropic spirit of corporations and individuals to continue this important research.
UM/Sylvester has a solid commitment to advance the wealth of knowledge of our physicians and researchers, and to educate our community about cancer prevention and awareness. Our supporters help us continue this important educational effort, which is vital to the survival of our patients.
