Top UM Researcher Honored for His Work

The Israel Cancer Association, USA, is honoring Joseph D. Rosenblatt, M.D., of the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center for his work in cancer research and his ambitious support of his colleagues in Israel. Dr. Rosenblatt is the associate director of clinical and translational research, chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at UM/Sylvester, and professor of medicine at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. At the ICA USA gala on Wednesday, February 9, at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Dr. Rosenblatt will be presented with the seventh annual Emanuel G. Rosenblatt Award for Scientific Achievement. (Dr. Rosenblatt is not related to the late Emanuel Rosenblatt.)

UM Researchers Identify Important Enzyme

The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine has identified a component of RNA metabolism that plays a key role in helping cells adapt to changes in their environment. The study was led by Murray P. Deutscher, Ph.D., chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and is published in the January 21 issue of the journal Molecular Cell, http://www.molecule.org/.

UM/Sylvester Expands Center for Cancer Prevention and Genetics and Joins Two Clinical Trials

The University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is proud to announce the creation of the Center for Cancer Prevention and Genetics, expanding the use of genetic screening and counseling to predict and prevent more cancers. “It’s a paradigm shift to allow us to predict a person’s response to diseases and environments,” said Louis J. “Skip” Elsas, II, M.D., F.F.A.C.M.G., director, Division of Medical Genetics at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami.
