UM/Sylvester Names ADL and Jewish Federation Crusader as Major Development Officer
The University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has named William H. Rothchild director of Development for Principle Gifts and Foundations. UM/Sylvester executive director of Development Marilyn Emas made the announcement January 25. “We’re excited to have someone with Bill’s depth of professional development experience join the Sylvester team to expand our outreach efforts in the South Florida region,” said Emas.
Rothchild brings more than 30 years of experience with non-profit and community service organizations, most recently directing several national programs at the Anti-Defamation League in New York. Rothchild also served as the regional director of the ADL for the Palm Beach Region from 1996 to 2003, when he joined the ADL in New York. “I’ve worked for years fighting evils of bigotry in society,” said Rothchild. “Now I’ll be fighting another evil, cancer.” He has also worked for the Jewish Federation and Jewish family and housing services in Florida, New York and New Jersey.
Rothchild had a family member successfully treated for cancer at UM/Sylvester, so when this opportunity presented itself, he couldn’t resist. “It’s overwhelming, the kind of support UM/Sylvester has in South Florida,” he said. Rothchild brings valuable philanthropic experience in Broward and Palm Beach Counties to UM/Sylvester, and his diverse background includes extensive healthcare experience as executive director of agencies that provide long-term care and housing facilities for older citizens. “I was a licensed administrator for health care facilities for years,” he said. He has also done work in community organization and planning, and with community centers and mental health services.
“His personal family experience helps him bring a unique and valuable depth of understanding to what we do,” said Emas. “Coupled with his wealth of development and management experience and knowledge of the philanthropic community all across South Florida, having Bill on board helps us expand our reach.”
Bill Rothchild can be reached in Miami at (305) 243-9088, or at UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach at (954) 571-0109, or (800) 545-2292.
UM/Sylvester was founded in 1992 to provide comprehensive cancer services and today serves as the hub for cancer-related research, diagnosis, and treatment at the University of Miami School of Medicine. UM/Sylvester handles more than 1,100 inpatient admissions annually, performs 2,800 surgical procedures, and treats 2,900 new cancer patients. All UM/Sylvester physicians are on the faculty of the University of Miami School of Medicine, South Florida’s only academic medical center. In addition, UM/Sylvester physicians and scientists are engaged in more than 150 clinical trials and receive more than $30 million annually in research grants. UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach recently opened to better meet the needs of residents of Broward and Palm Beach Counties. This 10,000 square-foot facility at I-95 and S.W. 10th Street offers appointments with physicians from six cancer specialties, complementary therapies from the Courtelis Center, and education and outreach events.
