UM/Sylvester Announces the 2006 “In The Garden” Gala

11.01.2006

The University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has announced the 2006 bi-annual “In the Garden” Gala. Expected to raise more than $1 million to benefit cancer research, the gala will take place on Saturday, December 9th at the exclusive Westin Diplomat in Hollywood, FL.

Following the 2004 sold-out gala, this year, Grand Gala Chairs Mike and Constance Fernandez, Honorary Chairs Malcolm and Doree Fromberg, and Legacy Chair H. Allan Shore are helping lead the way to raise this year’s $1 million goal. Since the very first gala in 1992, Gala Chairperson Fredi Consolo, Auction Chair Peggy Silver, Special Events Chairperson Gail Gidney and 2004 Caroline W. Halpern Award recipient Elsie Sterling Howard have led the gala fundraising efforts, planning a fantastic evening every two years to increase awareness of the medical miracles happening at UM/Sylvester and to raise significant funds for research at our community’s premier cancer center.

The UM/Sylvester “In the Garden” glamorous gala includes an elegant gourmet dinner, exciting live entertainment, and a luxury live auction featuring $25,000 handmade white gold and diamond chandelier earrings from Levinson Jewelers and a silent auction with merchandise from some of the world’s most exclusive retailers, resorts, restaurants, hotels, cruise lines, and jewelers.
Produced every other year, the “In the Garden” Gala raises funds to support UM/Sylvester, South Florida’s only university-based cancer center. Recognized as one of South Florida’s premier social events, the bi-annual gala attracts nearly 1,000 philanthropists, community and business leaders from Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties.

UM/Sylvester opened in 1992 to provide comprehensive cancer services and today serves as the hub for cancer-related research diagnosis, and treatment at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. UM/Sylvester handles more than 1,400 inpatient admissions annually, performs 3,000 surgical procedures, and treats 3,000 new cancer patients. All UM/Sylvester physicians are on the faculty of the Miller School of Medicine, South Florida’s only academic medical center. In addition, UM/Sylvester physicians and scientists are engaged in more than 200 clinical trials and receive more than $31 million annually in research grants. UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach opened in 2003 to better meet the needs of residents of Broward and Palm Beach Counties. This 10,000 square-foot facility at I-95 and S.W. 10th Street offers appointments with physicians from six cancer specialties, complementary therapies from the Courtelis Center, and education and outreach events.
