Sylvester at Deerfield Beach Opens Women’s Center and Radiation Oncology
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of UHealth – University of Miami Health System is expanding its scope as South Florida’s only university-based cancer center by adding new programs and state-of-the-art options at its Deerfield Beach facility. Among the weapons in the fight against cancer is the new 4,300 square foot multidisciplinary women’s center, led by breast cancer expert, Charles Vogel, M.D., professor of medicine.
Sylvester at Deerfield Beach also is adding radiation oncology services under the direction of internationally renowned prostate cancer specialist Alan Pollack, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chairman of radiation oncology. The Deerfield Beach facility is building more square footage to establish a full slate of radiation oncology services to be used for all types of cancer. “By adding radiation to our arsenal of weapons in Deerfield,” says Pollack, “we truly offer comprehensive cancer services to our patients in that area.”
Vogel is excited about the new facility’s capabilities in patient care. “After treating patients in Broward and Palm Beach counties for decades, uniting these services in one facility is optimal. I’m looking forward to establishing it as a complete center for patient care.”
The women’s center at Sylvester at Deerfield Beach is building onto what is already an innovative facility for patients in north Broward and Palm Beach County. More than 30 cancer specialists offer multidisciplinary care in 14 of Sylvester’s 15 site disease groups, with 23 consultation rooms, a 22-chair chemotherapy infusion area, and a full suite of imaging services offered by UHealth Imaging at Deerfield Beach.
The former clinical director of UM’s cancer center from the mid-70s to mid-80s, Vogel was also medical director of the Cancer Research Network, Inc., offering clinical trials to qualified oncologists and their patients in South Florida. That program, still under his leadership, is now the community clinical trials outreach program of Sylvester/UMHC – University of Miami Hospital & Clinics. Dr. Vogel is an internationally acknowledged opinion leader in breast cancer treatment and research, credited with more than 500 breast-cancer related publications and abstracts.
The Sylvester team of oncologists in Deerfield Beach is now under the leadership of Mohammad Jahanzeb, M.D., an expert in breast and lung cancers. In addition to his role as medical director of Sylvester at Deerfield Beach, Jahanzeb is also professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, and associate director for Community Outreach.
“We are virtually creating a new facility,” says Jahanzeb, “where patients in our area can have access to more physicians armed with the full Sylvester arsenal of cancer-fighting weapons.”
Jahanzeb comes to Sylvester following several years of private practice in Boca Raton, and as an endowed professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. He also served as a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Board of Directors and the NCCN Guidelines Steering Committee. A current member of the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Jahanzeb has contributed to more than 100 reports, book chapters, reviews and abstracts. “He brings a wealth of clinical and administrative experience to his new role which will benefit patients in the immediate area and beyond,” says W. Jarrard Goodwin, M.D., chief medical officer at Sylvester/UMHC.
Reshma Mahtani, D.O., who has worked with Vogel since 2007, joins the team as an assistant professor of clinical medicine. Mahtani is a board certified hematologist and medical oncologist who was an attending physician at Boca Raton Comprehensive Cancer Center. Vogel, Jahanzeb and Mahtani are combining their experience with Sylvester at Deerfield Beach veteran, Maria Restrepo, M.D., assistant professor of medicine, to form a powerhouse team of breast cancer experts at the new center.
The newly created radiation oncology center will harness the expertise of the Sylvester experts who have embraced new technology that works to expose as few healthy cells to radiation as possible, while precisely targeting cancer cells. A Sylvester radiation oncologist, working closely with the other specialists on the cancer treatment team, will customize a radiation treatment plan for each patient with state-of-the-art molecular and functional imaging using positron emission tomography (PET) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The new Linear Accelerator at Deerfield will have both On-Board® Imaging capabilities for daily tumor localization, as well as RapidArc® for more rapid delivery of radiation. Pollack says providing this new service for cancer patients in the area “further enhances Sylvester’s ability to provide novel approaches not available anywhere else.”
