Nonprofit gives $1.5 million for leukemia research
The Pap Corps, a nonprofit that raises funds for the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, has donated $1.5 million to endow a professorship in leukemia..
The gift represents the first endowed professorship funded by the 62-year-old nonprofit, a statement said.
Dr. Ronan Swords, a leukemia expert from Ireland, now holds the post. At a recent meeting of the nonprofit’s leaders at Boca West Country Club, he said that re-purposing of existing drugs is more important than ever for leukemia treatment because approval for new drugs takes so long.
