Sylvester Researchers Expand Firefighters Cancer Initiative with Renewed Funding

Surrounded by firefighters, advocates and lawmakers, researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center announced that they are extending the Firefighters Cancer Initiative started nearly one year ago. The goal of the partnership is to better understand why firefighters may face a higher risk of cancer and find ways to improve their health and safety.

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has announced the appointment of Ashok K. Saluja, Ph.D., as the inaugural Director of the new Sylvester Pancreatic Cancer Research Institute at the Miller School of Medicine (SPCRI) and Associate Director for Research Innovation, Senior Associate Dean for Research, as well as professor and vice chair of surgery.

Dr. Sakir Humayun Gultekin Joins Sylvester and Department of Pathology

Sakir Humayun Gultekin, M.D., has joined Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and UHealth. Gultekin will serve as Director of Clinical and Molecular Neuropathology for the University of Miami Brain Tumor Initiative, where he will support its comprehensive brain tumor program via clinical and basic science research.

Sylvester Wins Three Florida Sterling Council Awards

During the Team Showcase Competition at the 24th Annual Florida Sterling Conference on June 3, the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center Laboratory team presented on the topic of “Safety Matters: Decreasing Blood Transfusion Turnaround Time at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center” and won an award in the “Best Use of Tools” category. The team was also named the “Overall Runner Up” among all six participating organizations.

Surgeons Take to the Field to Raise Research Funds

Neurological surgeons at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center traded in their scrubs for softball gear to raise money for pediatric brain tumor research, raising more than $100,000 at the J. Lawrence Pool Neurosurgery Softball Tournament held in Central Park in New York City on June 11.

Pap Corps Announces $4 Million Gift to Sylvester

The Pap Corps recently announced a $4 million gift for cancer research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The gift includes funds raised through a partnership with the Dolphins Cancer Challenge and is the third-largest gift in the history of the Pap Corps.

Sylvester Researchers Study Size and Gene Expression to Classify Uveal Melanomas

A team of researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has conducted two new studies that may help guide prognosis and treatment of uveal melanomas. Building on key discoveries made in recent years, the research team, led by J. William Harbour, M.D., an eye cancer expert at Sylvester, factored tumor size and mutations into a patient’s prognosis.

Novel Immunotherapy Trial for Lymphoma Offers Hope to Patients at Sylvester

Researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine are testing a novel cellular immunotherapy approach to treating patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma who have failed standard therapy. Sylvester is the first cancer center in South Florida to treat patients using this new approach.

Sylvester Researchers Identify Novel Treatment for Aggressive Form of Breast Cancer

A recent study by researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine revealed that triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), which has generally been unresponsive to hormone receptor-targeted treatments, can indeed be treated using vitamin D and androgen receptor-targeted therapy. The discovery offers a new treatment option beyond chemotherapy.

Sylvester Researchers Present Findings and Discuss Latest Trends at Annual Retreat

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center doctors, researchers and caregivers came together on April 29 and 30 at the JW Marriott Miami on Brickell Avenue for the annual Sylvester retreat to present their latest research and discuss trends in NIH funding, viral oncology, cancer epigenetics, tumor biology and cancer control, among other topics.

Weinberg, Ph.D., winner of the U.S. National Medal of Science in 1997, was the featured speaker at the 17th annual Zubrod Memorial Lecture and Cancer Research Poster Session, hosted by Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Lois Pope LIFE Center auditorium and the Schoninger Research Quadrangle on May 10.
