Thomas Curtis, the founder of the Miami Battery Manufacturing Company and the Curtis Battery and Electric Company in Miami, was among the top supporters of the University of Miami and the Miller School of Medicine. Over a span of nearly 35 years, he donated more than $4 million to various initiatives at UM.

Xi “Steven” Chen, Ph.D., a member of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and associate professor of biostatistics in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the Miller School of Medicine, has received a $1.8 million R01 grant from the National Cancer Institute. The funding will be used to conduct research in precision medicine for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), using statistical genomics approaches.

Dipen J. Parekh, M.D., grew up in his native India following the sport of cricket. But the renowned urologist recently had a chance to show off his baseball skills on a major league ball field. Parekh, professor and chair of urology and a urologic oncologist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of UHealth – the University of Miami Health System, threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Marlins Park June 19.

Komanduri, M.D., Director of the Adult Stem Cell Transplant Program and Kalish Family Chair in Stem Cell Transplantation, was recently named President-Elect of the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT).

A Phase I dose-escalation trial, conducted at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and multiple sites nationwide, has shown that a new gene therapy treatment for high-grade gliomas — the most aggressive brain tumors — is safe and improves patient survival. Having passed this milestone, the treatment will move on to more advanced trials.

Continuing an upward trend, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine reached a record-breaking fundraising total for the fiscal year 2016. According to standards set by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the Miller School raised an unprecedented $159.8 million for the fiscal year, which ended May 31.
