The second annual Dolphins Cycling Challenge fulfilled its mission of doubling the first year’s fundraising goal. At Sunday’s Dolphins game, the Miami Dolphins Foundation presented a check for $1,070,000 from the Dolphins Cycling Challenge to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The amount is one of the largest gifts ever to Sylvester from a single event.

New UM Pain Center Offers Unique Team Approach

When David A. Lubarsky, M.D., M.B.A., the Emanuel M. Papper Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management, joined the Miller School more than a decade ago, he was intent on establishing a departmental pain clinic and, over the years, oversaw at least eight different plans.

More than 860 cyclists, including over 160 children and 21 cancer survivors, rode various events across three counties to take part in the 2nd Annual Dolphins Cycling Challenge (DCC) on November 5th and 6th to raise money for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The two-day event featured a kids’ ride and six different routes from 30 to 170 miles that went through 37 cities in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

FDA Approves New Lymphoma Drug Based on Miller School Research

Offering hope to lymphoma patients who have exhausted their treatment options, the Food and Drug Administration just approved a new drug which was based on an antibody developed at the Miller School of Medicine and has proven effective in recent clinical trials against Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL) and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) in patients for whom standard therapies failed.

Pediatric Oncologist Receives Hyundai Scholar Grant for Leukemia Research

The nurses are the best.’’ His sentiment is shared by so many of the Kendall satellite’s patients that the unit has earned the highest patient satisfaction scores.

Sylvester First in South Florida to Offer Novel Abdominal Cancer Treatment

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is the first in South Florida to offer a novel therapy for certain types of abdominal cancers that combines heated chemotherapy with surgery. The procedure is performed at the time of surgery and has extended the lives and improved the quality of life for patients who might otherwise have limited treatment options.

The second annual Dolphins Cycling Challenge, benefitting Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, is set for November 5 and 6. The two-day, 170-mile tri-county charity cycling event will be held in memory of Dolphins great Jim “Mad Dog” Mandich, who lost his battle with bile duct cancer in April. This major community initiative is a collaborative effort between the Miami Dolphins Foundation and the Miller School.

Cancer Researchers Find Genetic Differences in Breast Tissue Among Races

Results from a pilot study by scientists from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine suggest underlying genetic differences among ethnic groups are present not just in tumors, but in normal breast tissue as well. These findings may partially explain why women of certain ethnic backgrounds are more susceptible and at a higher risk for certain breast cancers than others.

Minorities in Florida have Different Melanoma Rates Compared to National Trends

Miller School researchers have found that melanoma rates among minorities in Florida differ from national trends. Scientists discovered higher incidence rates among Hispanic men and non-Hispanic black women, but lower rates among Hispanic women. Free Circulating DNA Might Aid Prostate Cancer Diagnosis
