He never dreamed that as he was riding his bicycle to raise money for Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in memory of Dolphins great Jim “Mad Dog” Mandich, there was a cancerous tumor growing inside his own body.

The second annual Dolphins Cycling Challenge fulfilled its mission of doubling the first year’s fundraising goal. At Sunday’s Dolphins game, the Miami Dolphins Foundation presented a check for $1,070,000 from the Dolphins Cycling Challenge to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The amount is one of the largest gifts ever to Sylvester from a single event.

More than 860 cyclists, including over 160 children and 21 cancer survivors, rode various events across three counties to take part in the 2nd Annual Dolphins Cycling Challenge (DCC) on November 5th and 6th to raise money for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Nobody likes chemotherapy, but patient Joaquin Hernandez is grateful he receives the treatment at Sylvester’s Comprehensive Treatment Center in Kendall. “If you have to come, this is where you want to come,’’ Hernandez said. “The service is great. The nurses are the best.’’ His sentiment is shared by so many of the Kendall satellite’s patients that the unit has earned the highest patient satisfaction scores.

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is the first in South Florida to offer a novel therapy for certain types of abdominal cancers that combines heated chemotherapy with surgery. The procedure is performed at the time of surgery and has extended the lives and improved the quality of life for patients who might otherwise have limited treatment options.

Results from a pilot study by scientists from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine suggest underlying genetic differences among ethnic groups are present not just in tumors, but in normal breast tissue as well. Miller School researchers have found that melanoma rates among minorities in Florida differ from national trends. Scientists discovered higher incidence rates among Hispanic men and non-Hispanic black women, but lower rates among Hispanic women. In many cancers, scientists have discovered that key gene regulators which normally control cell growth have either been turned off or mutated. That change in the regular pattern then allows unrestricted cell production and the creation of tumors. In most cases, patients with recurrent, late-stage squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck are facing a disease that is incurable. The vast majority of patients do not respond to standard therapies after a recurrence, and even if they do, the median survival is only four to six months.
