Professor of Pathology

Description of Research

The following are Dr. Cote’s major areas of research interest and research in progress:

  • Detection and characterization of micrometastases in patients with epithelial tumors, including national and international clinical trials in breast cancer and lung cancer
  • Molecular mechanisms of tumor progression and response to therapy
  • Molecular mechanisms of racial/ethnic variation in prostate cancer risk
  • p53 targeted therapy trial in bladder cancer, national and international clinical trial studies
  • Development of novel biosensors for protein analysis
  • Development of nanotechnology platforms for cancer applications
  • Integrated microdevice to capture, detect and characterize circulating tumor cells

  • Establishment of BioNIUM with funding support from Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation and matching support from University of Miami
  • An inventor of the nanosensor and circulating tumor cell capture technology platforms
  • Principal Investigator for 32 federal and state-funded research grants, with $25 Million in funding
  • An author of over 200 peer-reviewed publications
  • Six awarded and three in-process patent applications
  • Participation in multi-institutional clinical trials in prostate, breast, lung and bladder cancers for detection and characterization of micrometastases in patients
  • p53 targeted therapy trial in bladder cancer, national and international clinical trial studies
  • Demonstration of sensitive development of nanotechnology-based platforms for applications in cancer and virology
  • Development of an integrated microdevice to capture and detect circulating tumor cells
