Meet the Staff
Xi (Steven) Chen, PhD, Core Director, SCCC Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared REsource, Associate Professor, Public Health Sciences
Dr. Chen serves as the Director of the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resources at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is an Associate Professor of Biostatistics in the Department of Public Health Sciences. Dr. Chen comes from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine where he was a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and an investigator of Vanderbilt-Ingram Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Chen received his doctoral degree in statistics from North Carolina State University. His research is focused on statistical genomics and bioinformatics for cancer research, especially developing and applying innovative statistical and bioinformatics methodology to facilitate translational genomic research from bench to clinic. To this end, he has published more than 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is the principal investigator of a NCI R01 grant “Integrative prediction models for metastasis risk in colon cancer” which collects data on mRNA expression, somatic mutations, and clinical information to develop clinical-genomic risk prediction models and subtypes for colon cancer patients. In addition, Dr. Chen is also a major contributor for identifying six triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtypes and corresponding gene signatures. He is the developer of the web-based software “TNBCtype”, which has been widely used by breast cancer research community.
Lola Sumner, MA, Sr. Manager, Business Operations
Mrs. Sumner joined the University of Miami, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in 1996. Mrs. Sumner serves as the core administrator for the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource. She obtained a Masters of Art Degree in Administration and Bachelor of Science in Professional Administration with specialization in Information Technology from Barry University.
Mrs. Sumner is currently responsible for the management of daily operations of the BBSR to include revenue management, budget preparation, cost recovery, usage and reporting, and personnel administration. Additionally, she assists the BBSR director with development of objectives, policy and procedures, and project and collaboration planning. Mrs. Sumner has 20 years of experience working with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center Administration and Research.
