Pre-Award Services

The core provides pre-award services at no charge to investigators to promote and enhance grant applications. The services include:

  • Providing community profiles that include cancer surveillance and socio-demographic data, as narrative descriptions of communities or populations and other supporting information for grant proposals
  • Obtaining input from the core’s Community Leadership Board and network of neighborhood-specific Community Advisory Boards to ensure the research design reflects the community’s interests
  • Obtaining letters of support from community organizations and advisory board members
  • Establishing and negotiating research partnerships with community-based organizations
  • Developing culturally and linguistically-appropriate study design, recruitment and retention strategies, study materials, and participant incentives

Resources for Pre-Award Services

  • Surveillance data from the Florida Cancer Data System and the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program
  • Socio-demographic data from the US Census Bureau, the American Community Survey, and other resources
  • Behavioral data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey, the Youth Tobacco Survey, the National Health Interview Survey, and other resources
  • Community Leadership Board (CLB), comprised of organizations that serve a cross-section of Miami-Dade County’s population, particularly underserved and minority population sub-groups
  • Community Advisory Boards, comprised of individuals who work and live in neighborhoods of interest, e.g., medically-underserved areas or areas with high cancer risks and rates
  • The Southeast Florida Cancer Control Collaborative (SFCCC), a voluntary group representing providers of cancer services, advocacy groups, and others, that is supported by the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center through the DCO Core
