Arts in Medicine
Sister Caroline Golden, an artist with the Arts in Medicine program, hangs patient artwork in the Comprehensive Treatment Unit at Sylvester/UMHC in Miami.
For some time, studies have suggested that the arts have a lot to offer those facing illness. Sylvester’s Arts in Medicine program allows patients and caregivers to relieve stress and anxiety through creating works of art. Patients can enjoy a variety of creative exercises right at their bedsides by creating watercolor abstract monoprints, silk wall hangings, or greeting cards. Art supplies are accessed from a fully stocked rolling cart called the “Art Kart.” Volunteers and volunteer artists always are needed for this innovative program.
